a market-town, formerly a borough, in the county of Somerset, 130 miles from London. It is situated on the river Axe, below the range of the Mendip hills, near the great chasm known by the name of Cheddar Cliff. The church is a large Gothic edifice of great antiquity, near which stands the market-house. Market-day, Saturday. Pop. in 1851, 939.
