AYAMONTE

Volume 4 · 123 words · 1860 Edition

a city of Spain, in the province of Huelva, on the left bank of the Guadiana, which empties itself into the ocean about two miles from this place. Ayamonte is well fortified, and the harbour is good, but, on account of a bar at its mouth, it is of difficult entrance. The principal employment of the inhabitants is afforded by the fisheries, especially for sardines, tunny, cod, and horse-mackerel. But this branch of industry has suffered by the extension of the general coasting traffic. Ayamonte is said to have had in the sixteenth century 16,000 inhabitants. Present Pop. 4675. Lat. 37° 9', N. This also is the name of a town in Portugal, in the province of Alentejo, 3 miles N.W. of Minfort.
