Bacchae, in Antiquity, the female companions of Bacchus, who are said to have followed him in his Eastern expedition. It was likewise the name given to the priestesses of Bacchus, who celebrated the orgia or mysteries of that god, and are sometimes designated by the names, Maenades, Thyiades, &c.
