BAJULUS

Volume 4 · 92 words · 1860 Edition

an ancient officer in the court of the Greek emperors. There were several degrees of bajulu; as, the grand bajulus, who was preceptor to the emperor; and the simple bajulu, who were sub-preceptors. The word is de- rived from the Latin verb bajulare, to carry or bear a thing in the arms or on the shoulders; bajulus and gerulus being the names applied to those who performed this office for the children of the great; whence the subsequent figurative use of the term. The word passed in the same sense into Greece.
