Balliol, Sir John de, founder of Balliol College in Oxford, was the son of Hugh Baliol, of Bernard's Castle, in the diocese of Durham, and very eminent on account of his power and riches. During the contests between Henry III. and his barons he firmly adhered to the king. In 1263 he began the foundation and endowment of Baliol College, which was afterwards perfected by his widow, Dervorguille. He died in 1269. His son, John Baliol, was the competitor with Bruce for the crown of Scotland.
