BANE

Volume 4 · 59 words · 1860 Edition

from the Saxon bana, a murderer, signifies destruction or overthrow. Thus, "I will be the bane of such a man," is a common saying; when a person receives a mortal injury by anything, we say, "it was his bane;" and he who is the cause of another man's death is said to be le bane, that is, a malefactor.
