BARETTI

Volume 4 · 148 words · 1860 Edition

GIUSEPPE, a native of Turin, was born in 1716. He came to London in 1751, where he became known by the publication of his Italian Library, and obtained the appointment of secretary to the Royal Academy, which he retained till his death in 1786. He was the author of an excellent Italian and English grammar, and a valuable dictionary of the same languages; and he afterwards compiled a Spanish and English dictionary. He had the misfortune, in a brawl in the streets of London, to stab a man, who died of the wound. He was tried for his life; and defended himself with great ability. He proved that the homicide had been committed in self-defence from an unprovoked attack; and was acquitted by the jury. On this trial Dr Johnson, Garrick, and Burke, gave favourable testimony to his character, and spoke of him as intimately known to them.
