BARRÈRE (or BARÈRE) DE VIEUZAC, Bertrand, originally an avocat, was one of the most noted and cruel members of the convention in the first French Revolution. He was born at Tarbes in 1755, and died at Paris in 1841. His was the horrible apophthegm, "Il n'y a que les morts qui ne reviennent pas." The list of his works, historical, political, poetical, and miscellaneous, is numerous. The graceful style in which he couched even his sanguinary proscriptions procured him the singular title of the Anacreon of the Guillotine. See FRANCE.
