BARTHIUS

Volume 4 · 165 words · 1860 Edition

GASPAR, a learned German philologist, born at Custrin, in Brandenburg, on the 22d June 1587. M. Baillet has inserted his name among his Eufans Collèges, upon the ground that at twelve years of age he had translated the Psalms of David into Latin verse of every measure. Upon the death of his father, who was professor of the civil law at Frankfort, counsellor to the elector of Brandenburg, and chancellor at Custrin, he was sent to Gotha, then to Eisenach, and afterwards, according to custom, went through all the different universities in Germany. He afterwards travelled into Italy, France, Spain, and England. He resided latterly at Leipzig, where he died in 1658. He wrote a great number of books, the principal of which are,

1. His Adversaria, a large volume in folio, the second and third volumes being left by him in manuscript; 2. A Translation of Æneas Gazzetta; 3. A large volume of Notes upon Claudian, in 4to; 4. Three large volumes upon Statius.
