a town of France, in the department of Ain, and capital of an arrondissement of the same name, is situated near the Rhone, 39 miles east of Lyons. It is the seat of a bishopric founded as early as 412, and contains an episcopal palace, an ecclesiastical school, a museum, and a public library. In the vicinity are the best lithographic stones in France. Pop. (1851) 4517. The arrondissement comprehends nine cantons and 112 communes, with a population of 83,626.
