It is the seat of a bishopric founded as early as 412, and contains an episcopal palace, an ecclesiastical school, a museum, and a public library. In the vicinity are the best lithographic stones in France. Pop. (1851) 4517. The arrondissement comprehends nine cantons and 112 communes, with a population of 83,626.
