or Bezant, a coin of pure gold, struck at Byzantium in the time of the Christian emperors; and hence the gold offered by the king at the altar is called besant or bizant. It seems to have been current in England from the tenth century till the time of Edward III. Its value is not precisely ascertained, but it is generally estimated at 9s. 4½d. sterling.
