an Italian province of the kingdom of Sardinia. It is a mountainous district, bounded on the N. by Sesia, on the E. and S.E. by Vercelli, on the S.W. and W. by Ivrea, and on the N.W. by Aosta. Area 264 square miles; pop. in 1848, 130,691. The capital, from which the province derives its name, is on the banks of the rivers Cervo and Aurea, 38 miles N.E. of Turin. Pop. between 8000 and 9000, employed chiefly in the manufacture of silk and linen goods, and in the cultivation of vines. Long. 7. 50. E. Lat. 45. 55. N.
