a city, the see of a bishop, in the province of Bari, in the kingdom of Naples, on the great road from Foggia to Bari. It contains, besides the cathedral, twenty-four churches, and 14,500 inhabitants, who export the excellent wine known by the name of Zagarello.

BITTERFELD, a walled town of Prussia, capital of a circle of the same name, in the province of Saxony and government of Merseburg. It is situated on the river Löher, near the Mulde, and has manufactures of woollen cloth and hardware. It was founded by a colony of Flemings in the twelfth century. Pop. (1849) of town 3890, of circle 44,625.
