a rising market and maritime town of Sussex, in the rape, and six miles S.E. of the town of Chichester. Previous to 1785, when the proprietor, Sir R. Hotham, began its improvement, it consisted of only a few huts inhabited by fishermen. It has now become a favourite watering-place, and has many handsome villas, a market-place, mechanics' institute, hotels, baths, assembly rooms, and the other accessories of a watering-place. Pop.
