Volume 4 · 57 words · 1860 Edition

(Saxon bolfa, a bowl), a Scotch measure for corn, containing 4 firlets. (See FIRLOR.) The boll of wheat or beans is equivalent to 4 Winchester bushels; of oats, barley, or potatoes, to 6 bushels. A boll of meal is equal to 140 lb. avoirdupois. This measure is now abolished, corn being measured by the imperial standard measure.
