Volume 5 · 82 words · 1860 Edition

a genus of the natural order of Palms. The best known is B. flabelliformis or Toddy-palm, which in India yields a vinous juice and much sugar. This palm is 20 feet high, the leaves 4 feet long on foot-stalks of the same length. The juice is obtained by crushing the inflorescence, cutting off the upper part, and fastening the lower part to a vessel of bamboo, into which it drains. The fruit has the bigness of a small human head. See Botany.
