a town of European Russia, capital of a circle of the same name in the government of Kaluga. It is situated on the Prorva, 55 miles S.W.of Moscow. Pop. 5000. It has considerable manufactures of sailcloth, and in the vicinity is a rich convent, founded in 1444.
