BOWLES

Volume 5 · 98 words · 1860 Edition

REV. WILLIAM LISLE**, author of sonnets and other poems, was born at King's Sutton in Northamptonshire in 1762. He was educated at Winchester and at Trinity College, Oxford; and, having entered into holy orders, he received various preferments in the church. He is represented as having been an accomplished per- son, and possessed of an agreeable and playful disposition. By an edition which he published of the works of Pope he became involved in a controversy with Lord Byron; to which circumstance he was perhaps not a little indebted for the reputation he enjoyed. He died in 1850.
