a town of England, in the county of Cumberland, Eskdale ward, 10 miles N.E. of Carlisle, erroneously supposed by Camden to be the Bremetennacum of the Romans, lies in a narrow valley at the confluence of the Irthing and Gelt. The houses are for the most part old and meanly built. It contains four dissenting chapels, a town-hall, built by the Earl of Carlisle in 1817; a grammar-school, and a market-house, in which very large quantities of corn are annually sold. Gingham and check-making are the only manufactures of the town. Pop. (1851) 3074.
