or scolding-bridle, an instrument formerly used in Scotland, and some parts of England, for correcting scolding women. It consisted of a head piece, which opened and inclosed the head of the shrew, and was furnished with a sharp iron, which entered the mouth and restrained the tongue. Thus harnessed, the offender was led in triumph through the streets. Dr Plot, in his History of Staffordshire, has given a description and figure of this instrument.
