Volume 5 · 101 words · 1860 Edition

BARTHOLOMEW, a painter, born at Utrecht in 1620. In early life he went to Rome, where he was distinguished by the name of Bartolomeo, an appellation bestowed upon him by the society of Flemish painters called Bentvogels. He particularly excelled in landscapes, which he enriched with figures and animals drawn in a very spirited and masterly manner. His best works are views of Albano, Frescati, and Tivoli. He generally painted on a small scale; and his smaller pictures are most esteemed. He died in 1660. Breenberg also etched from his own designs a set of twenty-four views and landscapes with ruins.
