the hereditary provincial judges among the ancient Irish. The nature of their laws, which continued in force till the introduction of the English system of law in the reign of Edward III., has not yet been satisfactorily determined. There are, it is said, in Ireland ancient MSS., the publication of which would throw light on this curious and interesting subject. Till such elucidation be afforded, of which some prospect is held out, it were useless to hazard opinions on the character and value of the Breton laws as a system of jurisprudence.
