a large town of Austrian Galicia, circle of Zloczow, 58 miles E.N.E. of Lemberg. It is ill built and dirty, and the houses are mostly of wood; but it carries on an extensive transit trade with Russia, Poland, and Turkey, and has considerable manufactures. It is the seat of a mercantile tribunal, and has a castle, one Catholic and two Greek churches, three synagogues, grammar and commercial schools, theatre, hospital, &c. In 1779 Brody became a free commercial town. Pop. 25,000, of whom about five-sixths are Jews.
