a market-town of Staffordshire, in the hundred of Pirehill and parish of Burslem, 17 miles south of Manchester, and 150 miles from London. It stands on a gentle eminence near the Trent and Mersey canal, and is the principal town in the "Potteries" district. It has numerous neat and commodious dwellings for the working-classes, large manufactories, and some handsome villas. The chief public buildings are the chapel with an ancient tower, the market-house, the town-hall, newsroom, mechanics' institute, &c. Pop. (1851) 15,954, principally engaged in the potteries. Josiah Wedgwood, whose name is so intimately associated with earthenware manufactures, was born here in 1730.
