Volume 6 · 98 words · 1860 Edition

(the ancient Buthrotum), a fortified maritime town of European Turkey in Albania, immediately opposite the island of Corfu. It stands at the mouth of a stream three or four miles in length, connecting the lake of Vatzindro (the ancient Pelodes), with the bay. It is said to have been founded by Helenus, the son of Priam; and on the conquest of Epirus by the Romans, it became a Roman colony. The Roman walls, which still exist, are about a mile in circumference, and are mixed up with remains both of later and of Hellenic work. Pop. about 2000.
