a market-town of Ireland, county of Cork, on the Awbeg, 137 miles from Dublin by the Great Southern and Western railway. It was formerly a walled town of some importance, and has remains of two castles and an abbey, founded about the end of the thirteenth century. Buttevant has extensive infantry barracks. Pop. (1851) 1531.
