a town of Sicily, in the province of Catania, and 35 miles S.W. of the town of that name. It is in a very pleasant and salubrious situation, the streets are wide, clean, and well paved, and many of the public buildings are elegant. It is the seat of a bishopric, and has a royal college, hospital, orphan asylum, &c. This is one of the most industrious and commercial towns in the island. Pop. about 22,000.
