an Athenian orator, whose eloquence and high reputation made so deep an impression on Demosthenes that he abandoned Plato, and resolved thenceforward to devote himself to oratory. On account of the undue influence that Callistratus exercised in the state, he was condemned to death, B.C. 361; and retiring to Methone in Macedonia, he founded, it is said, the city of Datum, afterwards Philippi. Having returned to Athens, he was put to death.
an Athenian poet, whose works have nearly all perished. He is now only known as the author of the hymn in honour of Harmodiüs and Aristogeiton, who fell in their attempt to put down the dynasty of the Pisistratide at Athens. This ode has been beautifully translated by Thomas Moore.
