ANTONIO DE MONTAPLAN Y (1742-1813), an eminent Spanish historian and philosopher, a native of Barcelona. He spent the early part of his life in military service; but abandoning it in 1770, he removed to Madrid, where he was elected secretary of the Royal Academy of History. His principal works are, Memorias historicas sobre la Marina, Comercio y Artes de la antigua ciudad de Barcelona, 4to, Madrid, 1779-1792; Teatro historico-critico de la Elocuencia castellana, 4to, Madrid, 1786; Diccionario Frances-Espanol, 4to, Madrid, 1803; and Questiones criticas sobre varios puntos de historia, economica, politica y militar, 8vo, 1807.
