a town of Northern Italy, kingdom of Sardinia; and province of Turin, is situated on the left bank of the Po, here crossed by a wooden bridge 11 miles south of Turin. It is surrounded by old walls, and has a handsome church, a communal college, and several convents. Population about 8000, principally engaged in the spinning of silk and the manufacture of confectionery. The royal family name is derived from this place.
