(from caro cornis, flesh), in painting, denotes those parts of a picture that represent flesh, or which are naked and without drapery. Titian, Correggio, Rubens, and Vandyck, excelled in carnations.

Carnation is also the name given by gardeners to a cultivated species of Dianthus.
