Volume 6 · 76 words · 1860 Edition

an ancient Celtic town, afterwards a Roman colony or municipium in Pannonia, on the Danube. It was for three years the residence of Marcus Aurelius, during his wars with the Marcomanni and Quadi. It was taken and destroyed by German invaders in the fourth century, but was afterwards rebuilt. It was finally destroyed in the wars against the Magyars in the middle ages. Extensive ruins of this town are to be seen not far from Presburg.
