a town of France, in the department of Gironde, on the right bank of the Dordogne, 10 miles east by south of Libourne. Here in 1451 a battle was fought between the English and French, in which the latter were victorious; and near this is the chateau of Montaigne, where that celebrated essayist died in 1592.
