a fortified seaport-town on the north coast of Sicily, intendantcy and 40 miles E.S.E. of Palermo. It is tolerably well built, but its port is small, and its trade insignificant. On the summit of a lofty conical hill above the town are ruins of a Saracen castle. Pop. about 9000.
