a genus of Leguminosae, including only one species, C. Siligua, the carob or locust-tree, a native of the shores of the Mediterranean. The pod contains a sweet pulp, on which it is supposed that St John the Baptist fed in the wilderness, when it is said his food was locusta and wild honey. It is true, however, that the Arabs and other tribes eat also the insect locust.
