a market-town and parish of England, county of Dorset, on the river Cerne, an affluent of the Frome, seven miles north of Dorchester. An abbey was founded here in 987, of which some remains still exist. On Trendle Hill, N.W. of the town, is a colossal figure of a man with a club, 180 feet high, cut in the chalk. Pop. of parish (1851) 1343, chiefly employed in the manufacture of leather, gloves, and parchment.
