a town of Catalonia, Spain, 57 miles N.W. from Barcelona. It stands on an eminence, is fortified, and possesses the remains of an ancient castle. It has a fine Gothic church, and several convents. Its university (originally transferred from Lerida by Philip V.) has recently been removed to Barcelona. The inhabitants are almost exclusively engaged in agriculture. Pop. 4500.
