(French), a hood or covering for the head, anciently worn both by men and women of all ranks, but afterwards appropriated to doctors and licentiates in colleges. The name eventually passed to certain little heraldic devices placed on the foreheads of horses which drew the hearse in pompous funerals. The cap worn by knights of the garter is still called a chaperon. See Cap.
