CLAUDE, the inventor of the simple French telegraph, was born in Normandy in 1763. It is not now believed that he was aware of the previous devices of a similar nature by Hooke and Amontons; but he was so deeply affected by the attempts of his countrymen to deprive him of the honour of an original inventor, though the machine was adopted by the Legislative Body in 1792, that he died of deep melancholin, in 1805.
