an important maritime town of China, province of Chehkiang, 50 miles N.W. of Chinhai. It is the port of Hangchau, with which it has good canal communication, and is the only Chinese port trading with Japan. It was attacked and much injured by the British force in 1842, but was abandoned immediately after the engagement.
