a municipal borough and market-town of England, Somersetshire, hundred of East Kingsbury, 18 miles S. of Bridgewater, and 139 miles from London. It is governed by a mayor, 4 aldermen, and 12 councillors, and was made a parliamentary borough, returning 2 members to parliament, by Edward I., but deprived of that privilege in the reign of Edward III. The town stands upon an eminence on the S. border of the county, is well built, and has a large market-house, a handsome church, hospital, town-hall, endowed grammar-school, and manufactures of lace and woollen goods.
