CHARPENTIER

Volume 6 · 81 words · 1860 Edition

FRANCOIS (1620–1702), dean of the French academy, was educated for the bar; but preferred the study of languages and antiquity to that of law. He was employed by Colbert in establishing his new Academy of Medals and Inscriptions; and was a principal contributor to the series of medals struck on occasion of the principal events which distinguished the reign of Louis XIV. His principal works are a Life of Socrates, a Translation of the Cyropædia, and a good collection of Ana.
