CHARTULARY

Chartularius, an officer in the ancient Latin Church, who had the care of charters and papers relating to public affairs. He also presided in ecclesiastical judgments, in place of the pope. In the Greek Church the chartulary was called chartophylax; but his Charybdis office was there even more considerable. The word char- tulary is also used for a record or register, as of a monastery.
