a town of France, capital of an arrondissement of the same name, and of the department of Haute Marne, on an eminence between the Marne and the Suize, 19 miles N.N.W. of Langres. It is the seat of tribunals of primary instance and commerce, is tolerably well built, and has an elegant town-hall, a palace of justice, communal college, theatre, public library, and museum. It has manufactures of coarse woollens, druggets, hosiery, gloves, and a considerable trade in iron and iron wares. Pop. (1851) 6088. In 1814 a treaty was concluded here by the allies against Napoleon.
