a maritime province of China, between N. Lat. 27, and 31, and E. Long. 118, and 121; bounded on the N. by Kiang-see; E. by the Eastern Sea; S. by Fokien, and W. by Kiangsi and Nganhwui. Area 39,150 square miles; population, according to the last official census of 1825, 26,256,784. This is one of the most fertile and most commercial of the provinces of China. It is well watered, and produces abundance of cotton, silk, tea, rice, and other grains. Its manufactures include silk, cotton, and linen goods, gold and silver stuffs, paper, &c. The capital is Hangchau-Fu.
