or Sheribon, a seaport-town on the N. coast of Java, capital of a district of the same name, and the residence of a Dutch governor, is situated at the head of a wide bay 125 miles E.S.E. of Batavia. Lat. 6° 48' S., Long. 108° 37' E. It was formerly a place of considerable importance, but in the early part of the present century a pestilential disorder carried off the greater part of its inhabitants. Though it has never fully recovered from the effects of this disaster, it has still a considerable trade. The town and harbour are defended by a fort. The district is very fertile, and produces the finest coffee raised in the island. Timber, cotton, indigo, sugar, and pepper, are exported in large quantities.
