a market-town, hundred of Grumbald's Ash, Gloucestershire, 27 miles S.S.W. from Gloucester, and near the Yate station of the Bristol and Gloucester railway. It contains one parish and various dissenting churches, with several schools and charitable institutions. The population is chiefly agricultural, the principal articles of trade being malt and cheese, for the sale of which there are monthly markets, and two annual fairs. Near the town are several quarries and coal-pits; and about two miles from it there are Roman remains. Pop. of parish (1851) 1195.
