CHIROGRAPH

Volume 6 · 68 words · 1860 Edition

(χείρ the hand, γράφειν to write), an ancient kind of deed which, requiring a counterpart, was engrossed twice on the same piece of parchment counter-wise, with a space between in which was written CHIROGRAPH, through which the parchment was cut, and one part given to each party. It answered to what is now called a charter-party. Chirographs were first used in England in the time of Henry III.
