(χρῖσμα, from χρῖναι to anoint), in the Roman and Greek Churches, oil consecrated by the bishop, and used in the administration of baptism, confirmation, ordination, and extreme unction. It is prepared on Holy Thursday with much ceremony. That used in ordination is more usually styled unction. Chrism Pence, Chrismatis Demurr, or Chrismales Demurr, was a tribute anciently paid to the bishop by the parish clergy, for their chrism.
