La, a maritime town of France, department of Bouches-du-Rhône, arrondissement and 16 miles S.E. of Marseilles, on the west side of a bay of the Mediterranean. It is surrounded by old walls, and is regularly and well built. The port, protected by a mole and defended by a fort, is commodious and secure, and has a lighthouse with a lantern 82 feet above the level of the sea. It has a considerable trade in wine, oil, and dried fruits. Pop. 4,200.
